We moved to Grand Junction 2 years ago from CA. It's been quite the adventure & we don't regret it, although there are many things we miss--beaches, restaurants, shopping, entertainment. Grand Junction is exploding with growth & we might have chosen a more rural area of CO if we had known what was to come. But we love hiking in the Monument and all the beautiful places you can visit within an hour or two of G.J. The weather is great! There are more sunny days here in the year than in CA. A cold winter is bearable with so much sunshine.

A friend of mine (I'm an RN in Mass. with a lot of interest in Colorado and many visits) tells me that everything around GJ is downsizing. Delta is much smaller. I looked for myself on the Western Slope (on line) and Front Range (for a friend) and boy, there wasn't much of anything. It's just not a happenin' time, not even for us.

Grand Junction is a small town on the western slope near the Utah border. The following is a list of negatives and positives:

Negatives:
- remote and isolated. closest cities are Denver (250 miles) and Salt Lake (250 miles)
- lack of good shopping. most people here travel to Denver at least once a month for shopping
- it's in the desert. brown landscape. very hot in the summer.
- lack of activities. you won't find city-life here.

Positives:
- it's a tranquil town with very minimal crime
- people are laid back. traffic is light
- doesn't snow much in the winter (much milder winter than Denver)
- outdoors experiences are fairly close: mountains, colorado monument, lakes, etc. are within a 30-minute to 1-hour drive

I've lived in Grand Junction for over 3 years, and I've never felt a need to go shopping in Denver. In fact I've not even been to Denver yet. The biggest city I've even driven thru in three years is Flagstaff-AZ. But that's my style...I'm not much of a city person, so the small-townness of Grand Junction suits me just fine. It has waaaaay more stores than I need to meet my shopping requirements.
