The girlfriend and I are coming to Colorado in August to camp over the state and do some rafting hiking etc.
Main question is, where/what are the best campgrounds? And most scenic, as in get out of your tent and see the mountains/rivers in front of you.
Thanks!!

I haven't checked lately, but for many of the popular campgrounds if you don't have a spot reserved by now you may well be SOL for the season - especially if you're planning to camp through the weekend. A lot of the popular spots are booked months in advance.

A good reason to look at backcountry or dispersed car camping options. And mainly 100 or 200 plus miles from Denver metro.

Not sure whereabouts you're looking to go, but I was just at Hecla Junction south of Buena Vista a few days ago and saw many spots had not been reserved for the upcoming weekend, though I'm sure it will be busier in August. The campground is smaller, but it's literally right on the Arkansas River. Can't beat the access for fishing or rafting.

Hecla International Port?

Actually I think traffic dies down on the Ark in August, especially after the 15th when the dam shuts off. that said, I heard Mt. Princeton got something like 12 feet of snow in the past 2 weeks so maybe we'll get an extended season.

By this map http://www.weatherstreet.com/city_sn...snow-depth.htm it appears Mt.Princeton has at most about 4-6 ft of snow depth up high, 8 new inches in the last 48 hours. Can't find a report of how much fell in last 2 weeks. Feet sure. 12 sounds high but I dunno. Was it a reliable local report? Meant as curiosity, not nitpick.

It was in conversation with a fellow kayaker. Sounded outrageous to me, but we kayakers always hope for more water.
