Hi, all. Love CO and it's time to start shopping retirement locales. I spent a couple of years living in Summit County years back, and still take yearly ski trips there, but can't afford to buy there now.

Scoping out Grand Lake, Granby or possibly Frasier & areas around Winter Park. Love to ski, hike and bike (road bike, not mountain bike).

Any feedback from these beautiful areas? Are winters similar to Summit? (Lots of sunshine; quick-melting snow in town)

It's a beautiful area but the Fraser valley is one of the coldest places in the state in the winter.
Friends of mine lived there for a while but they could not hack the winters.

true ^^^ bitter winters.

Everbrown forests in Grand Lake (sorry to say, very hard hit with beetle kill).
Pretty remote place to be as a retiree (healthcare needs)

I did a lot of road biking in that region in the 1970's, very nice for a couple months...

Carbondale, CO is worth considering, as is Steamboat.
I have a few retired friends in Eagle / Wolcott / Palisade (Less trendy areas of CO, but you can "get there from here")

Personally... It would be Burgess Jct, WY for me (or Powell, WY for being closer to 'services')

I have kind of grown to enjoy income tax free states . (left CO 35 yrs ago for WA)

If you want to be 'away', but near CO... look to Saratoga / Encampment, / Woods Landing, WY (Snowy Range).

Final spot before death is intended to be the Pioneer Home in Thermopolis, WY (Senior Care home within State Park!) very affordable... I have my name on the waiting list. (about 30 yrs early I hope...)

SD has some REALLY great options. Spearfish and Sturgis and Piedmont are premo retirement spots (especially if you have VA healthcare), SD is income tax free too! Can't beat the biking in Black Hills. (for the 50 weeks / yr without 'rally')

If you go to check out SD, Stay here. the host did a RTD bike trip AFTER she retired!

Wonderful place to stay! ~$20/ night with FULL kitchen and I had an entire floor to myself.

in Winter Park, CO I often get a whole LODGE to myself (off season weekdays!) Chose a room, any room!

Thx for the feedback. Cold is NOT where I want to be in the winter! Summit always seemed fairly mild (sigh...)
