Has anyone ever heard of a Mountain lion getting into the trash. I was awakened by an animal getting into the trash which is usually a bear. I am 95% sure this time it was a cougar and had a very long tail. I am second guessing myself because I have never heard of cougars trash digging. I live in a rural area in the foothills and cougars are present at times.

I know keep my trash in..

I've lived in the foothills for 20 years. I've never heard of mountain lions getting into garbage. But that doesn't mean it isn't possible. If your garbage smells like meat or fish and they are hungry, why not?
These articles mention "securing your garbage properly" ... https://user.govoutreach.com/boulder/faq.php?cid=23373

If it was a cougar she probably just got lost on her way home from the bar and stumbled into the can.

If you had raw meat in the garbage it might be an attractant.

Never heard of any mountain lion getting into trash during our 15 years of living in the foothills.

Bears, raccoons, yes.

Maybe it was a large dog.
