"Colorado is now the best place to buy a new electric car
$5,000 discount at the dealership starting in 2017 is arguably best deal in country"

What a deal!

Is this a good idea or is it just welfare for the rich?

Colorado is top state for electric car rebates

Yes, it's a good idea. Our dependence on oil needs to end. Besides the emissions destroying the planet, there's our being in bed with and financing nations that are trying to destroy our way of life.

You failed to mention all the gov't subsidies given to the oil industry.

Are Nissan Leaf owners rich?

^ Barry are emissions from power plants better then Tail Pipe emissions?

The Electricity has to come from somewhere.
Coal, NGas, Hydro, nuclear, Wind, .... Oil(But very little Elec is from Oil now)

I got a Leaf using Georgia 5K & Fed 7.5K Tax Credits, (GA tax credit went away last year).

I got it to save money, on a around town car for commuting. (Can charge for "Free" @ work)

That all depends on the power source. In Colorado we are still fairly coal dependent. The upside is that the coal plants aren't in the metro area and don't contribute to smog in Denver as much as a gas burning car does.

You do make a very valid point though. We need to start switching our energy production to less polluting sources. Solar, wind, and even nuclear (gasp!).

Meh. Colorado is switching over to natural gas and renewables in lieu of coal for some generation capacity. The rub is that renewables' utilization rate is so low that you're pretty much looking at a 1:2 replacement rate where 1MW of coal is replaced by 1MW of a renewable and 1MW of backup natural gas.

I doubt you see a new nuclear plant in Colorado in any of our lifetimes.

As others have already stated, it depends where you are. If you're in West Virginia, it's actually worse. Many places, better.

Natural gas is about half the CO2 emissions of coal per megawatt. Better, but not near as good as renewables.

The full electric cars we hand built in Colorado back in 1976 were well below $5000. Our company provided free plug-ins at each of their Colorado factories. Too bad it didn't catch on....

I will stick with my 50 mpg 'grease cars' (since 1976 as well)
3 million fleet miles, zero detectable emissions. Works for me!

I'd rather drive this, better range than the leaf and not dependent on coal.

2017 Honda Clarity
