My pals and I are driving down from Vermont to Colorado near the beginning of December with the hopes of finding work and housing on or near a ski mountain. With that said, we are aware that that would be pretty far into the season, and we're not limiting ourselves to mountain work. We are looking for some serious hands one work to whoever needs help for whatever reason. We are aiming for work near Denver, Colorado, but, again, we're not picky. We are all male, ranging from ages 17-19 and we would love to do something outdoors. If anyone can tell us of any work that sounds at all like this we would really appreciate it!

Thanks, Drew

There aren't any ski mountains *that* close to Denver.

The ski resorts are like 40 to 60 miles away. If you want to work at a ski resort move to Summit County.

Most of the "work and housing on or near a ski mountain" jobs and housing for the ski season have been filled in pre-season hiring.

You're arriving at a time when the ski season has already started, and the tourist season kicked in with the likely ski resort openings prior to Thanksgiving holiday time. Even though early in the ski season, Thanksgiving is a major holiday time in the resort areas, typically operating very close to capacity.

Affordable local ski resort area housing will have long been snatched up by others.

Your "best" opportunities for jobs will come from those retail and hospitality businesses that didn't fill all of their job openings at the beginning of the season, and most of that will not be "outdoors" work. That leaves you with the problem of finding affordable housing; you can just about count on needing to split housing with multiple roommates.

The closest ski area to Denver is Loveland, and it's a day use area, not a destination resort area where most of the ski season jobs will be found.

If your intent is to have a ski season winter, you'll probably do better with opportunities and finances by finding work in the Denver metro area and heading up to the ski areas when your time and finances permit for a day or two.

Also ... you don't mention what skills you and your pals have for work. If you're thinking that you'll get by on day labor type unskilled work, be prepared for a very competitive job market with lots of other folks already here, and be prepared for minimum wages to get by on. It won't be easy ... and you will need to put in a lot of hours, if available, to be able to make a living here. You may find that the economic survival will clash with your desire for recreation here.

If you want to come live and work in the mountains you better start applying now. Positions are filling up, employee housing is scarce and regular housing for a bunch of teenagers is unlikely. Try going to Vail Mountain Resort | Colorado Ski Resorts | Vail.com go to Jobs and see what you can find.

And the real reason you're coming to Colorado is...?

Anyway, two ski resorts have already opened. Ski resort jobs have pretty much been filled from the folk who worked for them last year, and the year before that, the year before that. Have you ever been to Colorado?

But you're young, enjoy the adventure.

Oh, to be a teenager again :-) I really enjoyed those years (age range 17-19), but never would have attempted what's discussed here. The plan described sounds like tons of hard work and not much fun, but everyone is different, so who knows. Best of luck!
