True. Most of these CUV's have 8.5-9" of clearance. Not extreme, but still higher than sedans

AWD will get you into more places, summer or winter, but is hardly necessary. There are plenty of trails in Colorado to choose from. I've done lots of hiking with only a sedan. Just use common sense and keep some emergency supplies in the trunk... sleeping bags, tarp, matches, etc.

Huge dumps can happen in the spring and fall. The closest call I had, with respect to getting stranded, was during September in RMNP. We were parked at a trailhead on Fall River Road for a day hike, and a big system moved in during the afternoon.

My Land Cruiser is 8.9 inches stock. My 4Runner is right at 9. CUVs are typically in the 7s which is still better than a standard sedan that would be in the 5s.

Mazda CX-5 = 8.5"
2016 Mazda CX-5 Features & Specs | Edmunds

Subaru Forester = 8.7"
2015 Forester vs 2015 Outback. Mark Miller Subaru, Utah

You are right on the CRV and RAV4 being only 6.X though!

The two above are the ones I'm debating on

I knew the Suby was good. Didn't realize the Mazda was that high up. Nice!
