Yes that place is remote! We did our own 20 day private party raft trip of the Colorado River through the length of the Grand Canyon some years ago, you can hike there from the river to visit; Supai Village.

The area we took off the river was on the Havasupai Indian Reservation and you have to get a permit from them and pay a fee to be able to use that take out. It was mid August and the temps were in the 120+ range everything seemed brutally hot to me, I remember as we were driving out there was a Havasupai woman walking along the road barefoot, complete unfazed by the heat.

I and 2 travel companions stayed in Durango (Purgatory Resort) the end of Sept to Oct 6, 2015 and visited Silverton on the Durano/Silverton narrow gauge train during our stay. It snowed in Silverton the day before we headed to Denver. I am glad all the snow was on the peaks and only patches of snow on the 550. We had to wait in spots as the highway department was on the last day of performing emergency shoring up of parts of the route. The driver nearly broke the steering wheel in half from clutching it so tightly.

I'm sure Animas Forks was VERY difficult to get to during its heyday.

I think Lake City should be on this list as well, and agree that Silverton can be very challenging.
