We are considering taking advantage of a rental offered to us in Mid-October this year in Steamboat Springs. I went onine to the Chamber of Commerce to look for activities and although it looked booked thru September for various activities- nothing is scheduled for October- (ok- there was a blood drive) Are they trying to tell us something- no fall activities? Is mid-October to late in the fall season for hiking /biking- etc? Is it too cold or something then (typically-I mean- I know weather is uncertain) we would be coming from the east coast to Denver and renting a car- any issues getting to Steamboat from Denver that time of year? Thank you.

It's what's known as "mud season" there. Meaning the weather isn't really great for rafting, hiking, skiing, or snowmobiling.

That's not mud season. It's shoulder season. Not enough snow to ski, but the summer crowds have died down.
Mud season is in the late spring when all the snow is melting.
