We are considering taking advantage of a rental offered to us in Mid-October this year in Steamboat Springs. I went onine to the Chamber of Commerce to look for activities and although it looked booked thru September for various activities- nothing is scheduled for October- (ok- there was a blood drive) Are they trying to tell us something- no fall activities? Is mid-October to late in the fall season for hiking /biking- etc? Is it too cold or something then (typically-I mean- I know weather is uncertain) we would be coming from the east coast to Denver and renting a car- any issues getting to Steamboat from Denver that time of year? Thank you.

It's what's known as "mud season" there. Meaning the weather isn't really great for rafting, hiking, skiing, or snowmobiling.

The weather could be snowy, it could be 60 and sunny and great for biking. Who knows?

We went for an early November weekend once, and had a good time. The public and private springs are still open, the downtown is nice, the restaurants are AMAZING, and we had a pretty good time. The place we stayed was $63 a night.

Getting there could be problematic if there is mountain snow. Get a 4WD vehicle either way, due to the outside possibility of traction laws in the mountains if it snows enough (requires snow tires, chains, or 4WD to drive in certain areas). Also, if you want to go to the private hot springs without paying $45 for a ride.

That's not mud season. It's shoulder season. Not enough snow to ski, but the summer crowds have died down.

Mud season is in the late spring when all the snow is melting.

Mid-October is a quiet time in Steamboat. The autumn leaves are pretty much gone and it's too early to ski.
The weather in October can be pretty nice with lots of sun and temps in the 50s/60s. http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/steamboat-springs-co/80487/october-weather/332189
Snow is always a possibility in the mountains but October is normally not a snowy month.
You can still hike and bike, go to Strawberry Park hot springs, go fishing...
