New Book Highlights Colorado's Beers, Hikes And History (Denver, Boulder: restaurants, activities)

Somewhere between hiking, history and drinking, you'll find the soul of Colorado, says Denver journalist Ed Sealover. His new guidebook is called "Colorado Excursions With History, Hikes and Hops." By day, Sealover reports for The Denver Business Journal.

The book offers 30 single-day excursions across Colorado focusing on one historical site, one natural site and one drinking site per day. "I think there is a bond running between history, hiking, and drinking," Sealover says. "If you want to discover the soul of Colorado, you will look to find it outside of cookie-cutter restaurants and strip malls."

I'd have to agree.

Colorado is so much more than Denver, Boulder, and Summit County. Its a diverse geography with elevations from 3317 to 14,400, prairie grasses to alpine tundra, vast expanses of fine sand to huge monoliths of granite. The people are no less diverse themselves and the communities they have established and maintain through out the state reflect the differences among all of us and the lands they occupy. Historically we have had populations of indigenous people, European, Asian, and African descent all call Colorado home. Some have passed through, some have left indelible marks. Colorado has been under the control of several different nations and has been witness to the expansion of the political continent, migrations of peoples, founding and squandering of fortunes, labor strife, subjection of the environment and fallout, sometimes forgotten, and modernization from all these places, people, and activities.

There is a lot of it out there. Go see it.
