We live in south Jeffco and JUST got back from a very enjoyable two-night getaway to Estes Park, and I was very surprised to see the aspens turning already! No, not a lot -- maybe even less than 1% -- but definitely enough to notice. Then when we got back home today, we saw the same thing here! I have lived here for 30 years, and I don't remember ever seeing this kind of change before about August 25th -- and usually not until the first week of September.

Any thoughts or opinions?

P.S. On Edit: I just looked it up, and early leaf change is a sign of stress (usually, drought). Figures.

We saw aspens turning on our drive between Buena Vista and Leadville yesterday. Elevation around 8,000 feet? Just a few leaves here and there, but enough to indicate that they are starting. I haven't seen the trees turning yet higher up on the Collegiate Peaks, which I can see out my front window .

I've seen aspens start turning as early as late July. Mostly in shaded depressions it seems. Always would see isolated patches in August regardless of weather.

So, our anniversary is August 16, and about that time, hints of fall start coming along even here in metro Denver, e.g. cooler nights, a little turning to the trees, etc. One year my neighbor and I (neither of whom has any expertise in weather forecasting mind you) were predicting an early winter b/c the trees were turning quite early. Didn't happen.

Those of you who make such a fuss about the Aspens turning need to visit New England in the Fall. There's more than one color besides yellow.

Maybe that’s why so many people plant maples?

I felt that way for many years, being from Pennsylvania (whose trees are just as nice as New England's, HA!). But now I'm more "it's not much, but it's all we've got". You do see some red Aspen sometimes.

I seem to recall reading that drought can affect this. Not sure if that’s the case this year.

I lived in both PA (east and west) and NH. No question PA gets color, but it's not quite as vivid. Must be the greater temp swings in NE.

I don't have aspens where I live but the cactus fruit are ripening a month sooner than usual.
