We recently moved to the West Slope from Denver. In talking to our new neighbors things have come up that they have heard about, but don’t understand:

1. Ski traffic
2. Not waving
3. Finding parking
4. Waiting for a table at your favorite restaurant
5. Snow in May
6. Large hail
7. Rush hour
8. Non local produce
9. High auto insurance rates
10. Not being able to hangout at your local winery with a band and a good food truck steps away.

Sounds nice. How difficult is to get places far away? Is the airport good?

It's about what you'd expect from an airport that has more baggage claims than flights per day. Kidding...sorta. Walker Field is pretty podunk and flying into and out of it can be expensive.

Moab, an hour
Telluride, Ouray, 2 hours.
Aspen 2 hours
Local brewpub, 3 minutes
Local winery, 15 minutes
Airport, a dozen or more direct jet flights to Chicago, Dallas, LA, Phoenix, SLC, Denver.

We priced international destinations from GJ to Paris or London as an example and flying from here added about $300 each. Less than driving to Denver, paying for parking and a hotel. And the airport is 15 minutes away. Ah, love it!

I recently priced tickets for a December trip to Paris from COS (where I live) and the prices were nearly $700 higher per ticket than flying out of DEN...needless to say, we will fly out of DEN and spend the $1400 on something else. For your flight and especially given your distance from DEN, the $300 premium is acceptable.

Flip side is a trip I took to Seattle last year was cheaper out of COS than it was from DIA. Definetly want to shop around.

Do people have to leave The West Slope to get specialty medical care?

There is a large regional hospital in town, St Mary’s. There is also a VA and a second hospital called Community.

I certainly have known people to go to Denver or in a few cases, Mayo Clinic in Phoenix or even Rochester (after surgery in GJ failed).
