I just heard about this area.....there are 15 prisons....& it’s the location of the only supermax prison that’s left in the US. It’s called the “Alcatraz of the Rockies”.......

Which towns does Prison Valley include....besides Canon City?? How close does all of it come to Colorado Springs? What’s the area like?

It's Cañon City and Florence. The area is about 40 miles southwest of Colorado Springs and 40 miles west of Pueblo.

Cañon City and areas west are nice. Florence isn't my cup o' tea.

We lived in COLO SPGS for 11 years, not a single problem from the prison population. The only problem we saw in the press during those 11 years was a handful of guys broke out of a jail in TEXAS and were found up in Woodland Park (IIRC).

There is an old prison in Canon City that is open for tours and it's a good day trip if you move to the area, especially if you take the lunch train ride that operates right down the street from the old prison.

Thank you...I’m not looking to move. I watched a show called “Valley of the Damned” on I.D.....it’s how I heard about prison valley. They show some of the area & towns...but they never said exactly the area or towns it covers.....or what it’s near.....

I had no idea the only supermax prison is there too......

There are some 'unique' dudes in the super max, like that guy Reed, aka the shoe bomber who tried to blow up an airplane with a shoe bomb.

Gotta admit, I've never heard that term before.

I'd also add that while there are several high security prisons there, like the Supermax, which houses about every bad dude you've ever heard about on tv, there also are a number of low security prisons that have inmates that are probably less of a risk than some of those found in local jails that have much less secure perimeters.

Colo Spgs is still a much higher risk international nuclear target than a prison escapee target, IMO.

He doesn’t even seem as bad as some they write about! So...what’s the area like? If 20% of the population is in prison with 13 jails....do most people that live there work for jails? What surrounds the supermax prison? I watch too many shows on ID...

A lot of the locals in Canon City, Florence and nearby towns work at the prisons. The Canon City area can be nice in that the climate is a bit protected by nearby mountains and the area is known as the "banana belt" of Colorado as it's a few degrees more moderate. It is near a lot of river (white water, etc) and mountain recreation and is popular for that with both locals and visitors. No one really thinks twice about the prisons. Do some google drive by tours of the towns to get a feel for them, or see the pictures on this site by clicking on CITY-DATA.COM in the upper left corner of your screen, then enter the name of the city.

I watch 🆔 a lot too, and was wondering the same thing as you posted about Prison Valley. I almost Googled it but forgot - too much excitement in my life lately.
