Husband is a Colo Spgs native and we lived there late 80's/early 90's (in Mtn Shadows) but have only been back a couple of times since then and never for very long.

We now live in Arkansas and took an RV trip to Great Sand Dunes NP; Curecanti NRA where we day tripped to Crested Butte/Kebler Pass, both sides of Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, Lake City, and Gunnison; Colo Spgs (due to unexpected work where a better internet signal was necessary); Twin Lakes where we day tripped to Buena Vista, Leadville & Independence Pass; Glenwood Spgs were we day tripped to Aspen, the other side of Independence Pass, Maroon Bells & the hot springs; Fruita, where we did wine-tasting at Palisades, Grand Mesa & Colo NM; Ouray where we went to Ridgway & Silverton & the Ouray hot springs; Telluride and it was here & off 145 that we finally saw peak fall colors! Colors were good in many places but timing wasn't quite right earlier; Mesa Verde NP; Durango & the rest of 550; Pagosa Springs where I spent a decadent day at the hot springs; back to Colo Spgs to play cards with old friends and see the sights.

The small mountain towns are lovely. The mountains are ruggedly beautiful. Hiking was magnificent. Colo Spgs has one of the best scenic backdrops of any city in the USA. Grand Junction/Fruita was nicer than I remember. The fall colors were amazing. It is very dry & more desert-like than I remember. The dead trees are heart-breaking. Colo Spgs drivers are insane (even got side-swiped (hit & run) while there). Pot shops are everywhere. Homeless are everywhere.

There are a whole lot of people! Maroon Bells crowd was ridiculous, we used to just drive up there and now you take a bus with hordes of peeps. Garden of the Gods had so many people you cant enjoy it. Crested Butte, Aspen, Telluride, Durango were all very full of tourists (yes I know we were tourists too). All the new housing developments stretching north from the CS - wow! It is hard to get away from people when camping & hiking unless you really 4x4 very far out.

But if I could hack the winters, I would move back in a heartbeat. Enjoy your state!

I live in Denver, but I like visiting Colorado Springs. Been there both during summer and fall. It's a magical place

.
What about the crowds?
Strain on infrastructure?
Water issues?
Ecology...
Political battleground state? (angry and polarized residents)
Affordability (housing)

Sometimes... places become more pleasant to visit than to live (especially to try to 'return' to a once pristine area. )

Sept and Oct can be very pleasant in Mtn States, great time to visit.

Even Alabama can be an improvement over Issaquah for a couple hundred days / yr.

No place is perfect, CO still gets a bit of my investment $$, but it has changed for this millennium +/-, So I choose to visit. Bring a bike and enjoy some crisp fall mornings.
