Delta variant surges in Mesa County as thousands attend festival

https://gazette.com/news/local/delta...9b1992b65.html

"Mesa County has the most delta variant cases of any county in Colorado, state health officials report, making the area a hot spot within a hot spot. A CDC team and the state’s epidemiologist traveled to Grand Junction to investigate how and why cases of the variant were moving so quickly in Mesa County.

At her hospital, LaCount has put in orders for more rapid coronvirus tests as the caseload has grown. She’s seen the intensive care unit start filling up with coronavirus patients, so that hospital officials are placing two in a room against normal practices.

Despite these alarming signs, many in Mesa County have let down their guard. The rate of eligible residents fully vaccinated has stalled at about 42%. LaCount has noticed that few people wear masks anymore at the grocery store. Thousands of people recently flocked to Mack, 20 miles from Grand Junction, to attend the Country Jam music festival, which could accelerate the variant’s spread to the concertgoers’ hometowns."

The remaining 58% unvaccinated become a petri dish for the virus to evolve.

Seems to me we'll run out of greek letters to identify future variants.

Death by COVID is a horrible experience, normally highlighted by extreme feelings of being unable to catch your breath, drowning and shear panic.

I saw a COVID death autopsy a while back that graphically showed what this disease does to the human body. The attending doctor literally pulled hand-fulls of jelly-like clotted blood from the deceased's chest cavity.

Every single person who has chosen to not be vaccinated should spend a day in their local hospital's ICU. I'm guessing that the experience may change your mind.

Per a CNBC article, Mesa County has 29% fully vaccinated. Why? Is an IQ below 100 required to live there?

My wife's sister and her daughter drove to Kansas, from Orange County, CA, by way of the 15 and 70. They spent a day/night in Grand Junction. They wanted to meet us for lunch, by the 25 here in Loveland and we said "absolutely not". Our niece has not been vaccinated at all, but her mother (wife's sister) has had both shots. Neither the SIL or niece know about the virus hike in Grand Junction and we weren't going to take any kind of chance with meeting them for lunch.

Wife and I have had both of our shots three months ago, but. SIL and niece weren't too happy that we weren't going to see them, but..........

95.3% of the people with COVID-19 who’ve been hospitalized in Colorado this year were unvaccinated

State data for first time also shows 78.7% of people with virus who’ve died were unvaccinated

https://www.denverpost.com/2021/07/1...ations-deaths/

"Just over 95% of the 9,891 people with COVID-19 who have been hospitalized in Colorado since mid-January were unvaccinated, according to data released by the state health department for the first time Monday.

The data, which further demonstrates the effectiveness of the shots, also shows that 78.7% of the 717 people with COVID-19 who have died in Colorado since April 1 had not received any doses of the three available vaccines."

Maybe medical insurance companies should start with-holding benefits for COVID-19 hospitalizations unless one proves that have been vaccinated. That would make things interesting.

How about implementing a vaccine passport?

If you want to go to any public place, you need to show proof of vaccination.

Yeah, I get it; that would make the righties heads explode.

Slippery slope. What's next - withholding insurance coverage for overweight people who have heart attacks and diabetic complications?

I've often thought that those who smoke, or are obese, should pay a premium for health insurance since they burden our medical resources.

I'd rather come at it from the other side by setting high prices for all health insurance and then give discounts to non-smokers and those with a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI). This would incentivize people to do the right things for their own health; they'd have their own skin in the game for a change, a reality awakening moment, a teachable moment.

I'd give people a 5% refund for non-smoking and another 5% if they have a healthy BMI. I'd look for ways to do this with Medicare as well as for those under 65 with commercial health insurance. In my scheme we'd see our doctors at least once per year, in the month of our birth, and the doctor would sign off on a form that I qualify for one or both discounts or tax refunds. If a doc falsifies the data they are subject to fines and/or losing their license to practice medicine.

Auto insurance firms give a discount for a clean driving record, why not give people a discount for clean living.

Home insurance firms give a discount if your home has certain features like a fire sprinkler system, nearness to a fire hydrant, and for Colorado residents there are discounts for hail-resistant roofing and having defensible space around homes in areas subject to wild fires.

Auto insurance and home insurance firms will raise the rates of those who place frequent claims and/or they will cancel your policy if you prove to be a dangerous driver or refuse to have defensible space.

Thus I think health insurance firms should be free to raise rates (or cancel coverage) on those who smoke, are obese, or live a dangerous lifestyle. Like all insurance firms, they are in the business of putting a price on risk and if people want to risk their lives smoking, being obese, or refusing a life-saving vaccine then the insurance firms should price it accordingly so that people pay for the damage they cause themselves.

People who lose coverage, get sick, run up huge bills they can't pay may very well end up with a lien against their home. It's a hard-nosed way to deal with the problem but how else are we going to prod people to do the right thing, take personal responsibility, and not stick we taxpayers with the cost of their awful choices.
