HI..Have a few questions. I am a single mom to two boys ages 11 years and 2 years..I am a Registered Nurse, who currently lives in Las Vegas, NV and I am looking to relocate. I have never been to CO but, from what I have heard and researched, it is very beautiful, and depending on where you go, quiet and serene. I am looking for suggestions on the perfect city or town. I would love to live in a country setting, but not so far away from a bigger city. Have you ever seen the movie "Sleeping with the Enemy". When Julia's character runs away from her husband and ends up in this perfect beautiful little town..that is what i'm looking for. I'm not sure if CO has anything like that to offer?
I'm not too fond of winter..and I realize that it does get cold and snow in CO..but i was wondering just how long the winters usually are there. (I'm originally from Northern Michigan where winter lasts nine months out of the year, and nice weather is only around for maybe a month out of the year..YUCK) so I really don't want to live like that again. I can put up with snow..but NOT nine months of it. I would just love to find the perfect place to settle down and buy a house. I have been moving around so much and it's not easy on my oldest. I just want to find some place safe, friendly, warm most of the time and beautiful, yet offers opportunites for my kids not too far away. If some of you could share advice I would greatly appreciate it..even if CO is not the place..I am open to other states..just not NV or Michigan! Thanks!

Well, the town in the movie was supposed to be in Iowa, so...

Why do you want to leave Las Vegas? What benefits would there be for you to leave other than a change in weather? Moving is expensive, especially if you have a home to sell.

What is your budget for rent or housing price range?
What does dad think about taking the kids out of state?

Good for you: Colorado Springs is opening or has opened two huge new hospitals on the far north end of town - an area which has really developed over the past five years or so. Search the threads, tons of info.

Nursing salaries here are not the highest. The best place to find what hospitals pay is the Denver Health website, as they are one of the few that list pay scales with their job openings. You will have to google it; I don't know it.

I looked at the Grand Junction hospital site (forget the name- St. Something?) and the listed salaries were barely lower than in suburban Boston. I was quite surprised.

Canon City. Lots of RN jobs and, a very warm, quaint town.
Easy to get to bigger cities, although it is growing by leaps and bounds!!

There are no perfect cities or towns anywhere in Colorado or anywhere in the world that I know of. They all have some plusses, and they all have some minuses.

Even though I would love to see someone come and help relieve Colorado's nursing shortage, I think Charles is right. This move needs to be thought through. The job is not the issue, the pay may be, depending on what you are making in Nevada. The Cali nurses seem to make a lot more than here; I'm clueless about Nevada's wages.

The fact that you have never been to Colorado tells me you should take a trip out here and look around. There is no "perfect town". Canon City is a nice independent town (not a suburb), but it's isolated and not for everyone. Metro Denver has some suburbs that are town-like, but they are still metro.

Take a few days off work when school is out and come out and look around.
