Hey guys! We currently live in Colorado Springs. We love springs! But it’s been brought to our attention that my husbands job may need us on the western slope next summer. No problem, I love the area. It’s beautiful. My question is, what do you guys know about Montrose? That’s definitely a town we would consider. We are originally from rural Montana, so we enjoy small town living. We have a pretty libertarian mindset, and we love the outdoors. We also have a 13 month old daughter. Is it safe? Cost of living seems reasonable. Thank you so much for your input!

Montrose is ok. Probably the most livable town between Grand Junction and Durango. Lots of great scenery around and you're really close to the San Juans. A bigger question for small, somewhat far-flung locales like Montrose is what will you do if your husband loses his job? Will it be easy for him to find another one? There used to be a big Russell Stover Candy factory in town, but they announced it was shutting down earlier this year.

According to the city's EDC website the top 5 employers are:
Montrose County School District
Montrose Memorial Hospital
Montrose County
City Market
Volunteers of America

Thank you for the insight! My husbands company is headquartered back East. He travels all around the state of Colorado and surrounding states. They just need someone on that half of the state full time.

Very safe, I was there back in the fall for a few weeks.
For a town that size, their police department is actually over-sized/modern; and they patrol seemingly constantly.
If your move pans out, try and find your residence near the south portion; as it's where all the stores are.
That was my only complaint, it seems every single grocery store etc was intentionally built on Hwy 550; this makes for a LOT of traffic during tourist season on that stretch of road.
The produce there is off the chain, locally grown goodness during summer and fall; so must recommend your visiting the open stands. There's a good chance the farmer is selling you his or her very own.

I've only been there to visit but it seemed quite nice from that perspective.

For its size, the airport is pretty convenient with seasonal direct flights to major hubs. You are a short drive to Ouray, Telluride, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the San Juans.
You have all the big box retail that you need. A few good restaurants.
The only nit is housing is tight on the western slope now. Good places go fast, builders are very backlogged so pricing is going up and up.

It’s a pretty sweet place to live though.
