Bears usually come out based more upon the "food supply" than based on the weather. If they come out too early... they are VERY hungry and don't find enough food. So they may come out briefly 2 or 3 times on late march... but, as posted above, about mid-April is typical... definitely by the end of April for Colorado Springs. Add 10 days for each 1,000 feet you go up in elevation.

Bears don't have alarm clocks so there is no set time... Basically, when the weather is consistently warmer and their food supply is more plentiful... which depends greatly depends on the elevation, latitude, and geographic features of where a particular bear is at.

Thanks. I am out in my yard with small children and need to be aware. My grandson and I almost ran into a huge one last summer.

The warm weather we had made me wonder if they might wake up too early.

Well, the bears are out for sure. Here's 4 of them chowing down just west of I-25 in the Rockrimmon area on 05 April 2010.

They wake up WHENEVER they want to. That's a great pic Mike! Didn't one also get into Circuit City here in town last year?? Or was that a deer?

Nawog, there are bear repellents (big ol' cans pepperspray) that you can buy at any sporting goods store. If your house backs up to the woods, it might be a good idea to have some around. They're not expensive.
