OMG Snikt, these photos are amazing!!!! LOVE!!
I think that one of the scariest roads is .. Shelf Road out of Canon City going towards Cripple Creek! Although beautiful and cutting time by tons...it isn't for the faint of heart!!
Of course there is always the roads out of Ouray to Yankee and such. White knucles are definitely going to happen, no matter what!!!

My husband and I took a spontaneous road trip to CO (with twin 2-yr-olds in tow!) this summer and decided the night before going that we would drive up Mt. Evans. We had originally wanted to do Pikes Peak, but the $40 car fee sounded a little extreme, and it wasn't paved all the way to the top!

So we opted for the $10 fee instead and drove all the way up the mountain. The drive up there wasn't the disaster. I spilled water on one of my twins' jackets so she borrowed mine while I froze my butt off! On top of that, we had left our car's lights on while we climbed up the summit and our car's battery died. Once a fellow Texan gave us a jump, we were greeted by sleet on the way down.

Here we were thinking that our brakes would fail on us or we'd slide down a cliff trying to negotiate all those hairpin turns, but other disasters were clearly in store for us!

Overall, it was worth it! I do wish the weather had been nicer so I could have taken pictures that came out as nicely as the ones posted here

Looking back I don't even really think about the absence of guardrails - maybe it would have been a crutch... not having them around certainly rounded out the experience of driving up a 14er, though!

I sure haven't, and since it's a federal park that closes in the late afternoon, I'd bet that very few people ever have driven it in the dark. Parts of that road are "white knuckle" driving even in daylight. At night, it would be quite a "thrill."

Here's a photo from my recent trip up there.

Spent the entire night up there a long time ago to see the sunset, stars, sunrise and changing moods of the mountains thru it all, but drove up in afternoon and left in the morning. Nice memory.

Years ago, (long before it was a toll road, and regulated) I spent the night of 4th of July at the top of Mt. Evanse - looked down upon and watched all of the fireworks in the metro area. We drove up before dark, but did drive down in the dark.

I'm thinking about driving up in the dark to catch a sunrise from up there.
