You could try Bayfield or Ignacio in the eastern part of La Plata County or else live in Mancos (roughly an hour's drive away over to the west of Durango on Highway 160). If you don't already have a good job offer in hand, I'd advise against just up and moving to the area without a roll of money in your pocket.

Yes, Durango is very expensive. When I lived there, there were 10 people working at my office. Only 1 lived within the city limits. 6 of us lived in areas outside of the city in La Plata County (including Bayfield and Ignacio), 1 commuted from Aztec, NM (45 minutes south), another commuted from Pagosa Springs, and another commuted from Cortez. Mind you, most of us were paid salaries that would be considered above average in a lot of places.

It's a tough place to make a living, but it's a BEAUTIFUL area. You'll have to take housing costs and commute times (especially during the winter) into consideration before you make your decision.

Best of luck!

A place doesn't have to be a forever place, unless that is what you are looking for.

There are still ways to control rent costs if you are willing to share or go way out of town, but it is getting harder. I have great views at a really great price but it is small, older with some compromises and I can't come close to matching it elsewhere.

What is expensive or reasonable to you on rent? Not the same for everybody.

I'm just looking to put my foot on the door, I live an hour and a half from where I live out here in California...paying 1,300 to sleep in the living room (+350 for car payments) and paying 4$ for a gallon of gas so....surviving on a budget is what I know best.

^^^Nothing wrong with living on a budget. in fact it is a common sense strategy for financial success. I've lived on a budget significantly below my means for much of my life. One of the best ways to sock away a bit of cash month after month after month, until you reach a point where you can buy a small house with cash and remove yourself from the mortgage game, greatly reducing your monthly housing expenses.

If you are a set of one or two people, you can find stuff for $1300 or less in Durango area. Some spend more or a lot more. Some spend less, or a lot less.

Come for a visit. Imagine if the place would meet your current interests. Worst case, you have a semi-vacation. Best case, maybe you start a new, more fulfilling chapter.

What's not to like? Sounds like an area ripe for Christian salvation...
