Au contraire mon cher. I had the unfortunate circumstance of being stuck in Colorado for about five, very, very long years. (Durango, to be exact). I most certainly know whereof I speak.

Check out Woodland Park, 15 miles up the mountain from Colorado Springs. A couple restaurants here and a few very nice places in Manitou Springs (10 minutes from Woodland Park). If all else fails, the casinos in Cripple Creek (25 miles from Woodland Park) are always hiring cooks/chefs.

You will want to land the job of elementary school teacher first!! We assume teachers are in demand. As you may know, elementary teachers are not in demand in each and every community. Get that job first!!

I have posted this many times before, but it bears repeating. Teaching jobs are not especially easy to get in Colorado, particularly outside of the metro areas. In those areas, teaching jobs are often some of the best paying available, and offer summers off. Those two factors make them very coveted. Once hired, people hold on to them--so there are often few openings. In the rural districts, there can also be a very strong unspoken bias toward hiring local residents--teaching jobs are often the few jobs available for a young person just out of college to get in those communities. Hiring that "nice son or daughter" of Mr. and Mrs. X in town is often a popular and politically astute move for a school administrator.

There is also the problem that schools in Colorado are going to be embroiled in the same funding crisis that is gripping most Colorado public agencies. Future teacher layoffs are a distinct possibility, and it is usually the young, recently hired, and untenured teachers that go first.

As for chef jobs, well, there has to be a customer to eat the food. The way discretionary income is disappearing for a lot of people, that could be a real problem. Most of the restaurateurs I know in the resort areas are seeing business declines of 30-70% this year. A friend who works for a food wholesaling company serving those customers tells me business is down for his company by over half--even though some of the company's competitors have either gone out of business entirely or ceased serving the area.

You probably need to rethink your plan.

Judging from the lifestyle you are looking for, I would take a good look at Fort Collins.
