There is still some color, you'll see a few bright aspen stands along the way. But overall it is mediocre (in my opinion). I've been photographing this area for more than 25 years. The big overlook between mile marker 38-39 north of Nederland is more than half gone and what's left of the color is dull.
We plan to hike in RMNP on Wednesday so perhaps I'll report back what we find up there.
I am wondering what Golden Gate Canyon is like right now. I don't have time to venture over there this week. That is one of our favorite areas for fall photography. It might be worth the drive.

waneroo has some good suggestions. Twin Lakes near Leadville (on the way to/from Independence Pass) is a great place. Aspen has nice colors, especially the Maroon Bells. Crested Butte has great fall colors, but more than 2-3 hours from Broomfield.
That's good to know as I'll be back in Vail in a week and am hoping to at least catch it just after peak at least.

I thought of Golden Gate as well, also Eldorado State Park. DH broke his foot and isn't up for a lot of driving/sitting in the car.

Default Fall colors near Leadville this weekend?

We are planning a trip up from Denver to Leadville tomorrow...have the leaves in that area already dropped or are the fall colors still pretty good? The national forest website is kind of cryptic and hard to interpret. What is the best place for fall color close to Denver currently?
