My husband and I are an interracial couple. My husband is black, I am white, and we have two children. I noticed that there is a very small black population in Grand Junction. Do you feel we would have any problems relocating to Grand Juction?

Thank you in advance for your responses!!

I don't think you will have any major issues in Grand Junction. Colorado in general is pretty tolerant of anything, as long as it doesn't affect them. The predominant population in GJ is white and hispanic, but yes, there is a small black population as well. I honestly think you would have more problems living in the south than GJ.

I have seen lots interracial couples in Grand Junction, and I have been here for close to a couple decades.I will say more and more of them recently, by the same token the population has basically tripled since the early 1980's, when the economy here was really having problems. I've gotten to know some of the kids from Mesa State college here in Junction who are in B-ball and football and more and more of them seem to like the area even when their college days are done. True, the overall population is small, but IMO delta07 is right.

The challenges that you face in Grand Junction are more likely to be financial rather than racial. Finding good paying jobs will probably be the BIG one. Until you've resolved that one, you are likely to be no better off than where you're currently living. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

"Small black population" is putting it lightly. There's almost no blacks here.
But the thing is that Grand Junction seems to be a very tolerant place. Every once in a while you see an interracial couple and I've noticed that nobody pays them any attention or treats them any different than anyone else. So I think you would feel comfortable living here.

We have an older racially mixed (black/white) couple in our neighborhood. We are quite friendly with them. I have also seen other mixed couples in town, some with children. I was a college student here until recently and I was friendly with some of the black students on campus.

Like most of the other poster said, you probably won't have any problems here.

Thank you all. I really appreciate it. I will be making 48179 to start and then go up to 49733. That is base; so, I will have a little bit of shift differential, Sunday premium, holiday pay, etc. on top of that. I researched rent a bit on craigslist; and, although some seem a bit high, there are others that would be reasonable for us. I am really looking forward to the move.

Rent is unusually high in Grand Junction. It's "big city" rent without the big city amenities. It shouldn't be like this.

Do you think I would have trouble living on my salary?

No you'll just have to spend an extra couple hundred a month on rent instead of something else you might do with it.
