I would focus on the West Coast, particularly the college towns that you mentioned. If this is your goal, New England is not the right place for you.

I don't know about that. Howard Dean got his start in politics by volunteering to help out with planning a bike path in Burlington.

Howard Dean was born in the Hampton's to a wealthy family with a lot of connections. He went to prep school and lived a privileged life. This gets off topic off of Durango, however to respond I know for a FACT that people in King County, and Pierce County, Washington who are small business owners - struggling financially w/ no money and no connections - advance to influencial positions in local politics.

And, outside consultants/employees hired by Cities are attacked, and forced to resign, when they don't listen to the ordinary citizens. I don't see this happening in Flagstaff, Arizona, despite lots of letters to the local paper.

Eugene, Oregon is known for its far radical left at UO (Univ of Oregon), who has a tremendous influence on local politics, such as environmental issues, if you go to the Eugene Weekly, for example, you see this immediately. However, readers of my posts already know I am opposed to smart growth . . . yet at least young people w/ no connection and no money have an influence on local politics . . .

The fact that a Gay Civil Rights ordinance failed to pass in Flagstaff, Arizona, despite significant public support including from northern arizona university, is significant. The place is run by old-timers, and this shows that small SW towns don't listen to the minority. The only "protest" from gays after it didn't pass was a candlelight vigil. No marches in the streets like you'd see if in Santa Cruz or Eugene, OR.

I will submit a poll on the national thread regarding these issues.

That is wonderful and that is why I said you'd be better off on the West Coast then the East Coast since you would like to get into politics.

Well in regards to politics, a lot of rural towns the majority of the population don't want California or New Jersey type CHANGE. That's partly why a lot of people live out there. They don't want to be around those types of people. Those folks screwed up their own states with socialist programs and high taxes, now that they made such a mess they want to move out to your rural town and start running you into the ground.

That is a generalization, but if you go to a town like Durango, it is likely many of the locals are not interested in hearing "big ideas" from some whippersnapper that just blew into town with all sorts of pseudointellectual big talk. In fact I know a lot of my Colorado family has a long time bias against Californians invading Colorado and for good reason.

Western Colorado is still a rugged frontier type place with harsh conditions of all sorts. It's a place you earn your spurs. And it is a small town environment, everyone knows everyone to some degree and it's not like a city where you can "hide out".

Boulder, Flagstaff, Santa Fe, and even the much larger Albuquerque, NM are also the same way, in my experience . . .

However, I'm looking for a small town with a low cost of living, and lower taxes than the big cities . . .

Yet it seems that in Durango, Boulder, Santa Fe, and Flagstaff, the very rich have brought their wealth and increased the cost of living for the existing population . . . by way of their fancy homes, condos, smart growth, and infilling . . . Flagstaff, AZ has a lot of folks from Southern California who are resented by the old timers . . .

Many of the Liberals in Flagstaff don't respect the locals, and try to get Liberal projects and programs through the Council using unethical tactics. There's one activist who posted names and addresses of members of the Mormon stake, who donated money to the Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment on his web site ... Ridiculous ... And other activists from out of state block Flagstaff growth, preventing the local multi-generational Contractors from building homes ... And they want Smart Growth Infilling, with multi-story condos all over town like you have in Durango; the old-timers don't like this either ...
