I agree with SCSUFan about having something like the Woodlands that's near Houston, TX. I remember reading an article about that on a flight from L.A. back home and it stopped in Houston. For those who haven't seen it...
but to be honest...i'd rather they raze Columbia Mall and put it there instead of Killian. I feel like that would be a catalyst to revitalize that corridor of the Columbia area...causing Decker, O'neil Court, Two Notch and Parklane to be renewed. I know people want to get to a fresh, new area...but i would love to infill instead addiing interest in that area.

Gentrify the Columbia Mall area all you want, but the residents and local businesses that are there now are just going to be driven somewhere else once rent and taxes there become too high and ten years from now you're talking about renewing somewhere else.

I would think that the rents around the Columbia Mall/Decker Blvd area are LOWER than Killan and village of the Sandhills no? I think the area declined because the population/income demographic that supported it shifted futher out to the Blythewood/ Sandhills/Killan areas leaving behind lower income people and stores. Its going to be tough to revitalize older aging suburbs in the Midlands. Good examples are Garners Ferry folllowed by St. Andrews/Dutch Square.. though portions of St. Andrews are still challenged. Columbia Malls owners definately need to rethink the Mall. I was in Macy's and walked out into the mall and was horrified at the level of vacancy.. though.. there are still streams of customers floating through.. I would relocate all of the stores to the first floor as their leases expired and think of something else creative to do with the second floor..... Artist space, Office Space?.. The old Belk should become an indoor sports complex..since the County wants to expand recreation programs. Rock Climbing Wall, Paint gun range, toddler gym, etc would certainly bring parents and teens back into the mall which could help the rest of the center. The owners of Columbia Mall should offer it to the County at a low rental rate in exchange for some form of property tax credit/abatement. Some out of the box thinking is needed... I am surprised the theatre hasnt been turned into a mega church yet... we are in the south after all... Praise the Lawd.. Alleluia
That's what I was getting at. They're almost certainly lower now, but if you try to revitalize that area too much, or too quickly, that won't be the case. I've wondered if it would be feasible to raze the mall and turn it into a water park or something similar. It'd draw visitors from a larger area than another shopping center, but it shouldn't improve surrounding real estate values drastically, if at all.
I think we're all set on churches, though. Churches around here are getting to be like Starbucks in most other cities. If you can't find a church you like from the vast selection Columbia has to offer, you just might be an atheist.
This is technically across Killian from KC proper. It's beginning to look like we're going to be getting a lot of interstate exit businesses, so more fast food chains and a gas station or three wouldn't surprise me.
