I am looking for advice on local neighborhoods/schools in these areas. I am married with 3 children, ages 11,7 and 7 so schools are very important to us and I see a lot of good things being said about the area. I am moving from central Michigan and will be looking to rent a house for awhile until we decide where we will plant our roots. My education is in criminal justice/corrections, but I have been working in mental health for the last 3 years. My wife is currently a stay at home mother and full-time student. are there any nice homes to rent in the country for $1000 and less?? I do not mind a 30-60 minute commute, and am used to driving in Detroit traffic (horrible). I have lived in the south before and am really looking for that laid back friendly community to raise my children in. Any input at all would be greatly appreciated!!

You'll definitely find better schools in the Lexington area, though Columbias' North-East area has some great schools too. Irmo, Chapin, and Blythewood would be worth checking out too as they have areas that are a bit more country than in Columbia. There are jobs available in your field of study here. The South Carolina Dept. of Corrections are actually holding job fairs across the state this month, the one in Columbia is on the 16th. Commuting anywhere around here isn't bad compared to most larger metro areas. We're in Irmo and can get to most areas around Columbia/Lexington within 30-40min. Hope this helps, and best of luck on your relocation!

If you want to live in the city, get a place as close to Dreher High School as possible so you'll stay zoned for that school and its feeder schools.

If you want to be "in the country" so to speak and zoned for good schools try the Pleasant Hill area of Lexington. Pleasant Hill Elementary and Pleasant Hill Middle are excellent schools and you could definitely rent in that district for $1000 or under.

Irmo schools are actually fine. We have two at Irmo Middle this year. They're zoned for Irmo High and we have no problem with that.

Maybe look at White Knoll or Gilbert. Lexington County Sheriff's Office is always hiring for correctional officers in the jail. Lots of turnover.

Thank you all for your input, our search continues. We would be comfortable in a suburb type setting to start with, and eventually will be looking for something more rural. Our home that just sold is in the city limits and the houses here are on top of one another with no yard/privacy, and we are pretty much done with that! We would like to find somewhere with a low crime rate, affordable rental housing, and within a 45 min commute to Columbia for work should I not be able to find something closer. Any advice on areas that we should avoid with this in mind?

Check Lexington County and the Chapin area. Once you get away from the lake, land is still relatively inexpensive and rural life is still possible with good schools and within 45 minutes of Columbia.

If schools aren't what you make them, I would avoid Swansea in southern Lexington County, and I would avoid Lower Richland County.

Actually all of the areas that were mentioned are within a half hour drive into downtown Columbia. There are parts of the more rural areas of Lexington, Chapin and Blythewood that would take a bit longer, but just keep it in mind when you're looking at properties. I also suggest working with a couple rental management companies or realtors. They know the areas well, and can be a great help. Also beware of scam artists on places like Craigslist.
