My husband has a possible job promotion, and one place in consideration is Columbia/Lexington, I just wanted to get a jump start a find out a little bit about the area. Which cities are best around this area. We wouldn't have to be right in Columbia or Lexington but somewhat close. We have two young boys and I am a SAHM. So, family friendly activities (museums, parks) is a must have, as well as good schools. Need safe neighborhoods, and would even be up to living in a country atmosphere but not hours from a grocery store.
What part of the metro will his job be located in? As far as being close to museums and parks and having good schools, I'd recommend the Shandon, Wales Garden, Heathwood and Rosewood neighborhoods in Columbia.
Great location for commuting. You can pick and choose what schools you want to attend and still keep your husband within a 15 minute commute. I am biased but I would look very hard at the new cluster of schools located close to his employer (Meadow glen elem and Middle, River Bluff high) and try to find something I like in that district. There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area and you are about 20 minutes from downtown and all of its resources.
If his position is in Lexington, you really have almost every option (except the northeast). Irmo, Lexington, and in-town neighborhoods are all possibilities.
Do you prefer newer or more established neighborhoods? Would you prefer a rural/suburban area or more in-town? And perhaps most importantly, how important is house size and budget?
Give the forum an idea of what you are looking for, and I'm sure posters on here can point you in the right direction. I think you'll find that the Columbia area has a wonderful quality of life, so much so that my wife and I are planning to move back after 2 years in Texas.
Lake Carolina! Great schools. Lots of community activities. Community of the year for 10 years! 30 miles of walking trails and paths! We too looked at Lexington, initially. We found it to be less diverse and extremely congested.

Lake Carolina is a lovely neighborhood, but it's a 30-40 minute commute from Lexington. There are plenty of other great options in the Lexington/Irmo area without having to make that kind of trek every morning/evening.
