I am wondering if there are areas in the Columbia area that allow for low or no cost long term camping. I am unemployed and have been actively searching for something for almost a year, but am now in danger of losing my home. Basically, I am looking at the possibility of living in a tent. Was hoping for any help I can find, thanks in advance.
Congaree National Park had free camping within the last year, but I know there were talks of that changing. I'm pretty sure it's still free and you can camp up to two weeks. You should call them. It's about 30 minutes from downtown Columbia.
Most traditional campgrounds and all state and federal parks put a time limit on camping. Camp Grounds and State parks are intended as temporary, recreational facilities. They do not want anyone living there. What you can look for is being a campground host. The host is usually a more lenghty stay and usually stays for free but has to assume some work duties at the facility. Like checking in guests, trash removal, bathroom clean-up, light landscaping and general upkeep. Some hosts can stay up to three or four months at a time. But it is still not a permenant residence. They also usually recommend that a host have an RV and not a tent.

All correct but for how long. Each of these places puts a time limit on a stay. Probably 10 days. The OP is looking for a long term spot and I just don't think there is such a place anywhere near Columbia.
