We went to the opener and it was a lot of fun. I do forsee myself going quite a bit for "thirsty thursday" was wonderful. Love the front entrance. I wonder if tgey will have housing or just apartments.
Im torn between gamecocks stadium and fireflies. I think gamecocks is nicer but like thd food a lot better and beer, isnt that what counts! Entrance is nicer of course, cant wait to see it in 2 years!
I dont like the park bench area, looks a little tacky with the cement all over, good idea though. Maybe theres more to do inside the stadium. I like that tickets are easier to come by than gamecocks hurdless....

I wouldn't be too worried yet if you're a Carolina baseball fan.

Exactly - even having a not so hot start, the Fireflies are still just 4 games behind Charleston. Beyond that, the South Atlantic League uses a split season format so the standings reset after the All-Star Break. As players hit their stride or players from last year's squad who still need some refining before they stick with the Advanced-A squad in St. Lucie get sent down, I suspect the team's fortunes will improve.

Truly this was our only gripe about opening night. I suspect that it'll get better as the season goes along and as the development is built there'll be more ingress/egress routes to help parking along. We paid $3.00, parked on the grass in the Oak Orchard and walked about 5 minutes to the park and back. There were shuttles running from the lots across Colonial Dr and also quite a few people just walking/crossing on their own over. As for the game presentation itself, not bad. The PA announcer missed a pitching change but caught it about an inning later. Our only complaint is that if you're seated behind the bench there's no continual display showing the count. The display on the main board will change from the count to a player's stats and you're forced to crane your neck to look at the boards mounted on the awning. Might be a nice idea to include a manual scoreboard in one of the outfield walls that would allow a fan to better keep track of it at a glance.

I have seen a few pictures on facebook from friends who have gone to a few games, that stadium looks freaking awesome!
Secondly, it has also looked pretty full in about every picture I've seen, which leads me to my next point to bring up which is they are currently 3rd in the league for average attendance per opener, and 5th for total attendance thus far, and have had one less game than those in front of them.
I gotta say, even as a Greenville guy now and a full blown Drive fan, I am thrilled to see this taking off in Columbia (and looking forward to tomorrow night where the Fireflies make a trip to Fluor Field for Thirsty Thursdays!)

When realistically will we learn the name of just one retailer or restaurant?
Doesn't anyone else find it a little bit strange to have a $37 million stadium all alone? The stadium sure looks beautiful, no doubt, but it would be a lot more attractive if it were integrated into a viable destination for more than just baseball. In my opinion, the longer they wait to build out the site the less likely the minor league enterprise is to be successful. When we "signed"onto this project (as taxpayers) we were sold a bill of goods in one sense; no one ever said the baseball stadium would be finished without even a single announcement (much less a single retail establishment being erected) at the same development. Just my two cents, I'm still tired of waiting for at least a hint of what is supposedly coming. If I didn't know better, I would have to conclude that the lack of any concrete announcements was indicative of the fact that there are still very tenuous negotiations on going. Yeah yeah yeah I can already hear the opposition, it's happening, be patient, etc.; but really, did anyone really sign on for this ?

I read recently that announcements were coming soon. I forget where I read that. I have no choice, though, but to say at this point that I'll believe it when I see it.

We are all frustrated, to say the least. I've long been a vocal supporter of this project, but even I have grown impatient. However, the dye is cast, and we need to support the stadium and hope the rest of the development takes off as promised because we all have skin in the game.

Took a tour of Spirit Comm Park before opening night and it sounds like they do have a good idea of what is expected to happen in the retail district. They didn't say which retailers, but did say that they are expecting announcements to come as soon as they are ready to begin construction. The First Base building looks ready to go and I'm anxious to hear what restaurants/retail are going to set up shop there. They said there is already a restaurant on tap for the Ensor building with office space above as well, but of course no name was given.
We were also told during the tour that the Babcock building is set to be renovated and will become apartments. I wasn't sure if he was right about that at first since I hadn't heard anything about it prior to the tour, but since that day I have seen Mayor Benjamin and Katz (the Fireflies owner) quoted in multiple articles regarding the Babcock building Stating it was set to become apartments rather than a convention center hotel as they had initially targeted. The way I understood it, it seemed as if they already had a developer in place and everything, they just haven't announced it yet.

One correction here - Katz is the team president, not the owner. The primary owner is Jason Freier.
