Seems like this deal is entirely counterintuitive to the big selling point for Bull Street to begin with: expanding the tax base in Columbia. Perhaps if there was a little bit more news to report about the retail, restaurant and entertainment side of the development, such a move by USC would be met with less skepticism. I think we're all getting a little bit skeptical at this point. The timing of this request by USC could not be worse. I'm a graduate of USCSM and totally agree with the need to update a deteriorating and dilapidated physical plant, but I'm not sure how that becomes a local governmental responsibility. The state should chip in some money, I do believe. But the lions share of the expenses should come from USC. If I'm not mistaken, last year USC announced that it had raised over $1.04 billion during its years-long development campaign. Shouldn't some of that money go into this project? And why not tap the more than 2500 graduates of the school for private contributions?
I am surprised there has not been any announcements of retail, restaurants, and entertainment coming to Columbia Common. It would be nice if entities engaged in more initiative.

The new med school should be a priority for the state. $50MM should be a minimum contribution from SC. State and local government contributed almost $100MM for Clemson's ICAR.......this project is much more beneficial for the state.

This is how I kind of feel. I mean, I'm a bit baffled that people are opposed to public funding for a new medical school that is guaranteed to bring the right kind of economic activity to that part of town.
Charleston has MUSC and USC has a four year medical school in Greenville. Do we really want to fall behind in this area?
I drove through Bull Street tonight, and realized how much of a gigantic project this thing is. Grading is crazy, I cannot believe how hilly it is. Buildings are in such bad shape, it will take a long time to fix up. We are not looking at a 5 year project, but really a 20 year project, and I have finally made peace with that. The wait will be worth it, I think. I was getting concerned, but there is a lot of progress.

Out of curiosity, what kind of progress did you see? Was it the stadium, the two renovated buildings, etc. or is there something new?

In my case because i go through there a lot. The finished the road that runs behind the stadium now. The added the light polls and drainage there. And i see lines sticking out of the ground ready for development. Considering that same spot this time last year was grass and dirt it has made big improvements.
