I first went to Richland Mall (then called Richland Fashion Mall, I think) in 1995. It was anchored by Parisian, Dillard's and JB White. The mall corridors were pretty quiet and it was maybe half full of stores. Since then, Parisian and Dillard's closed and most of the other stores have closed, too.
How in the world does that mall stay in business? I'd think that since the mall is about 30 years old, the costs of upkeep would probably be increasing, while the rents that the owners collect probably aren't.
It's in a nice part of town; why in the world hasn't it been torn down and redeveloped into a mixed-use development? Surely condos or something plus a few stores would do fine.
I moved here about that time. It had a HUGE food court, but only 3 vendors. The long corridors were empty. It was sad then 20+ years ago. I don't even understand why it was built so far off the Interstate. I had no reason to go there, the Wolf Camera near by was the only reason to be on that side of town for a long time.
I think Columbiana is the only mall doing relatively well.
I lived on Parklane back in 95'. Columbia Mall was sketchy then and MUCH worse now. Used to have two movie theaters out there.

Just curious!
Quick story, it was sold for a couple million dollars 8 years ago, and the call center part is owned separately. The mall is very unique in that is was purchased and redeveloped by Hooker out of Australia. They did a couple bad projects and this was one of the worst. The mall has a giant parking garage blocking the view from the road, it is horribly dated and retail is dying. I included a couple of links for reference.
This video shows plans that were laid out years ago... I just think people stopped caring. The Market is good, but the location would be better served by knocking it down and building expensive single-family homes.
It was supposed to be turned into like a town center. Hints why they renamed it midtown at Forest acres. But the economy happened and it feel through
Put a store in it that other stores follow, that’s about it’s only chance. And who’s to say those stores, such as Apple or H&M, would even go there in the first place though?

Agreed, besides Barnes and Noble, which most people basically use as a library, Belk and I guess the cinema on the roof, which is horribly out dated, it could be leveled and transformed into something a lot better.
Ironically Richland County probably should have purchased it and moved all their County their instead of Columbia Mall. The County Seat would now be Forest Acres instead of Columbia and they could control Forest Acres City Council more than Columbia's Council. They could then use other parts of the mall to develop new business possibly create a farmers market in the garages and use the top level as a "court house square" and host events. They would have to kick some money back to Forest Acres for he loss in tax base. Maybe create an industial park or something for them in another part of town or something
Surprised this has not been mentioned. Richland Mall sold and to be redeveloped with retail, apartments, grocery, brewery and park. The former Parisian store will be revitalized and Belk will move into it. The rest of the mall will be razed for apartments, brewery and a 100,000 sq ft unnamed supermarket. Rendering in this article.
