We live in the metro area and just got a letter from DHEC addressed to us saying that we along with 3 neighbors will be responsible for the neighborhood dam.

It sounds like that means we will have to pay to get it inspected every few years and are responsible if it breaks.

Needless to say, we had no idea we’d be responsible for the dam. Our property line goes up to the dam so I guess it shouldn’t be a complete shock. But anyway I guess I need to see an environmental law attorney.

Anybody else gotten a letter like this?

This is a result of the 2015 floods that were mainly caused by failing dams. They went decades without inspection. Some really big ones like Fort Jacksons destroyed huge areas. Or smaller ones that just washed away roads. Many Dams never did get replaced and now there are just open/overgrown pits that used to be ponds. Some bridges are still no replaced, since the related dams aren't repaired or taken down.

Your dam has to meet Army Corp of Engineers standards and that could mean you have to spend a heck of a lot of money to fix. Or, they dismantle it and you live next to a mud pit.
