Hi we are moving from detroit to hartsville in nov
can anyone suggest commutable suburbs in columbia SC to hartsville
or Charlotte suburbs to hartsville Please
Sorry, I just don't know much about the distance from Columbia to Hartsville, but you can always check out Northeast Columbia and Blythewood which would put you very close to I-77.
Northeast Columbia would be about a 45 minute commute to Hartsville since you would be going opposite the traffic during rush hour. The Summitt, Spring Valley, Wildewood, Lake Carolina etc. are all in the Northeast area. The closer and better your access is to I-20, the easier your commute would be.
I'm not sure how long you would definte as "commutable" - 45 minutes? an hour? 90 minutes?
In the Columbia area I would recommend the outer Northeast Richland neighborhoods, but that will still be at least an hour if not more away - this is approximately 60 miles each way. On the other hand, this is the best truly suburban area that will fit your criteria, as long as you don't mind commuting two hours a day.
If you're willing to go a bit more rural, I would try the Elgin/Lugoff/Camden areas of Kershaw County further east, which would cut your commute to probably around 45 minutes. While they area is suburbanizing/growing with new subdivisions roughly similar to those in Northeast Richland, it is definitely more "country" and further from suburban/urban amenities like a regional mall (e.g., the Village of Sandhill outdoor mall/lifestyle center is in NE Richland). The public schools (if that is a factor for you) in the Elgin/Lugoff areas are considered pretty good but honestly not quite up to the level of the better programs in the Richland 2 district in NE Richland, but many people have made the trade off to live in a quieter, more rural area when they settle in Elgin/Lugoff/etc.
Your commute from anywhere near Columbia will be along I-20 for the most part, and although the distances may be a bit far, it's a pretty fast road and you'll be against traffic.
I would not consider anything remotely close to Charlotte unless you want your commute to be 90 minutes each way at a minimum. Even far-flung "satellite towns" orbiting Charlotte, like Lancaster, SC or Monroe, NC are at least that far away. The mileage isn't that different from the Columbia areas I mentioned above but there are only relatively slow country roads from anywhere near Charlotte into Hartsville, so that stretches your commute from those area.
Out of curiousity, have you considered looking into living in Hartsville itself or somewhere closer? Hartsville is one of the nicer small towns in SC from my brief drive through the area, and has a pretty decent economic base with the nuclear plant, Sonoco, and Coker College. I would also definitely consider looking into Florence, as it is a pretty good-size city by SC standards. It has a small regional airport with commuter flights to Atlanta & Charlotte, a very large regional medical center, and most of the typical suburban stuff you'd find in Northeast Richland, but only about 30-45 minutes away from Hartsville. On the other hand it definitely is smaller than Columbia and doesn't offer things like being a state capital/university town with its clearly cosmopolitan atmosphere.
