I am so frustrated with the education system in SC and I haven't even moved there yet! I have never heard of a state that doesn't recognize private school education. My son misses the SC cut off date for first grade by 5 days, but has already done kindergarten in my state. When I called the school, they said he would HAVE to go back to kindergarten. I asked if he could test out, and they said no. They don't like to test kids out and that his age should really be in kindergarten next year. So, my 5 year old that reads at a 2nd grade level and is currently adding double numbers will still have to sit through kindergaten with kids learning to count and write? It doesn't add up and is clearly not in the best interest of the child to make him repeat a grade on principal. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am thinking of putting him in private school for the year, but I really want him to go to school with children in his neighborhood. And how do I know they will recognize his first grade year from the private school?

I don't understand that either. I was in the same position and was reading at a 2nd or 3rd grade reading level when I was 4. My parents tried to get me into Kindergarten but I had to do 4K and school has always been painfully slow. Luckily most districts have special programs that let the brighter kids pull away from the pack around 3rd grade and they don't look back.
It may really just be an age issue but I'm not sure. Good luck.

which district are you going to be living in? did you son K at a private school? i assume that he did based on the info provided but not 100%. Your post is a little funny in that as a high school teacher in Greenville County we recognize transfer transcripts from private schools here whenever they come up. All I can give ya is that in grades 9-12 based solely on first hand experience private school education is recognized. However, sometimes the accreditation of the private school may come into question.
UPDATE: We have decided to put him back in private school in SC, the process for public was insane. He just took the placement test and tested out of the first grade! I am still putting him in first grade but we have come up with an education plan to keep him interested. I always believe in doing what is best for the child, even if it means the school and parents have to put in a little extra effort. Hopefully, we will get to transition to public next year. Not what I planned, but things rarely go as planned.
