Haha, I lived there for 3 1/2 years. Exit 10 (the nicest place in Columbus) was built for the military. There is a noticeable difference during block leave and other holidays when Columbus seems empty and that is because the military all go home or go somewhere fun for a quick vacation because there are better places out there. Columbus is nothing without the military.

Remember, the main reason for the expansion is because of the military. Without them, Columbus would be nowhere, so it is not like the city has really done anything itself to create this. It is just expanding to meet the generosity of the government dropping a base there and needing troops for an Army.

I don't really sense the envy.

Economic growth is poised if ATL puts its second international airport in Columbus. Also, what does the army expansion has to do with the thoughts of a second int. airport in Columbus?

Columbus would be no where?

I've lived here for 29 years, my family over 100 years. So yea I know more about Columbus than you.

Yet, there are still no facts to back up your claim. So, you are saying if the military shut down Benning, Columbus would still have the economy is has now?

I know I am right. You know I am right.

Columbus has the largest corporate base outside of Atlanta, there is your "facts". There is more to Columbus than just Fort Benning. And yes 29 years does give someone better knowledge of the city, especially considering my family had a lot to do with the growth of Columbus.

Examples please...

Here is a short article about the history of Columbus from someone who used to live there:

Without the military, Columbus would still be an old town, just like Plainville and all the other going nowhere towns in GA.

Dawson Forest would make about as much sense as putting a 2nd airport in Columbus.

As an outsider, knowing very little about anywhere outside of Atlanta - the logical choice for a 2nd airport would be one within the ATC area. That means within 30 miles to become profitable and EASILY accessible. That means Fulton Cty or Gwinnett Cty. Gwinnett has rejected the idea - BUT there's plenty of open land east of there in which to build an airport from the ground up, doing all the right things correct the first time around.

If you live anywhere around Atlanta metro area, what are the chances you'd travel to Columbus, Augusta or Macon to transit the state. Which carriers would be using the airport and how would they connect, if not by light rail?

Not a chance. The idea is to provide seamless transportation. This is not feasible using Columbus and even if the EIS study has been completed - the acquistion of the land, doing engineering studies and starting construction - it will be 2030.

Wonder how the study is coming along? Believe it's due in early 2014.
