In less than a year, a new hotel should be standing on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Ram Hotels has received approval for a four story, 99 room, Courtyard Marriott hotel located directly by the foot of the 14th Street bridge here in Phenix City.

This development coincides with several new projects in the area along with an emerging white water rafting attraction. The hotel has direct access to the riverwalk and a pedestrian bridge to Columbus that is nearly ready to open.

In addition to the permanent service jobs this new business will bring to the area, between 75 and 120 construction workers will also be employed from ground break to grand opening. Ram Hotels sees a future in the Phenix City –Columbus area, and that's why they are adding their tenth hotel in the region.

The Economic Development Department said it will be open for business around November next year. Once it’s complete, the hotel will staff about 35 employees. The entire project is expected to cost 11.5 million dollars.

Other Development News

Construction is already underway for Troy University's 40-thousand square-foot riverfront campus and the nearly vacant Phenix Plaza will soon get a huge makeover.

Phenix City and Columbus are also working on other outdoor attractions. Talks are underway to create a ziplining course that runs across the river and a ropes course on the Phenix City side.

The Brickyard project is also making headway. The developers are fine-tuning the master plans, which include retail shops and a marina. Groundbreaking on the project is expected before the end of the year.

That 14th street area will be a little dense. And since the GDOT working on the riverwalk now,the plaza won't be ready on time for whitewater.

Jones say there are three phases to the more than $5 million project: reconstruction of the bridge, work on the access to it and the Riverwalk, and building a plaza near the bridge.

It's a perfect place in my opinion. Right along the riverbank. Can't get better than that.
