There will be less people trained from what I've read. After spending $3.5 billion I find it hard to believe there will be huge reductions.

It does seem strange with the huge spending increases over the past few years that they would reduce personnel by that much...somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% would certainly affect the progress in Columbus.

I agree! Our government is out of control. They are looking at brigades so this includes the 3rd Brigade, one of the largest and oldest brigades in the military. Fort Benning is home to that brigade. I just find it hard to believe it would be disbanded. I can see less training but not brigade reductions. I anticipate that Fort Benning will be hit some but not to the extent that other smaller bases will be impacted.

I wonder if some of those new buildings that cost millions will now be empty?

I doubt it. Most of those new buildings were for the Armor Division. They are not being looked at for reductions from what I've read. I imagine smaller bases will get hit harder. You can consolidate things better at big bases like Benning.

Okay people I found the reduction numbers.

3,900 soldiers
3,200 civilian workers.

Here's what I honestly think. North Columbus housing market and retail will be slammed by this reduction. I don't think anyone can dispute that. I think this is a great time to make downtown more like a "work, live and shop" type of environment. Midtown is already doing it.

I have heard that if they take the 3rd brigade, they will be bringing more training to Fort Benning. They are not publicly stating this yet. We will have less permanent people, but will have more visitors to the area so it will be good for the hotels & businesses. People already cannot resale their homes. It will really hurt our area to lose that many residents at one time. Even the Chamber was asking people to write & email letters to the Army so this is a genuine concern.
