The John B. Amos Cancer Center has received national recognition for its quality patient care.

It is one of three such facilities in Georgia and 79 nationwide to receive the 2012 Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award. The other two in Georgia are Coliseum Medical Center in Macon and Memorial Health in Savannah.

“We are pleased about the national recognition for our team, technology, quality measures, clinical research and all the other elements that comprise our program,” Dr. Andrew Pippas, medical director and director of clinical oncology research at the Amos center, said in a statement. “Most importantly, this recognition further assures our community that they have access to outstanding cancer care right here in Columbus.”

The award process included an on-site evaluation and criteria covering leadership, data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.

The John B. Amos Cancer Center, which is part of Columbus Regional Healthcare System, had more than 70,000 patient visits in fiscal year July 2011-June 2012, with 2,500 new patients entering its doors. Those visits were comprised of medical oncology, infusion and radiation oncology services.

The center has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer since 1991.
