Don't be silly....Birmingham is a metro of 1.1 million people.

This is like comparing Jacksonville's population to Atlanta's.

They have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Columbus seems to be doing well on the tourism front. Has much better amenities than Augusta or Macon. You must not get out of the utopia known as Augusta, Georgia.
Benning has been here since about 1920.
Try again.

Also just to add Columbus may have more HQs than Macon, Augusta or Savannah but those cities have just as many companies that have region operations that employees just as many of more ppl than any of Columbus's HQs. For Example Macon has GEICO's largest regional Office, the Macon office employs 5,400 people and currently hiring addition 500 new Employees to keep up with growth.... Putting them at almost 6,000 ppl..... Aflac, Synovus, TSYS, Carmike, Char-Broil... So what!!!

Exactly, it's good that they have them, but other than providing some with jobs, they aren't really doing anything to attract more jobs or people. They seem to think cities are in competition with them when they have already surpassed them or is outpacing them.

These numbers may not mean anything. Only the 10 year census is official. The yearly "updates" are more of a guesstimate based on some guess of a guess of a guess. Kind of like making a copy of a copy of a copy. Eventually it becomes meaningless. Now if the data year after year shows a decrease then perhaps it is then time to be concerned. Until then....bawa hogwash.

Those jobs numbers definitely do mean something, as those are accurate, so they are good indicators of how well cities are performing. That's what I'm referring to, not sure why you are talking about census estimates. That fact is that Savannah has the highest job growth out of the 2nd tiers, it is growing a lot faster than Columbus. Augusta is behind Savannah, both cities gaining jobs much faster than Columbus. Macon is next, which has surpassed Columbus in job growth. Columbus is last, has the slowest job growth, and at the same time, estimates show a decrease in population, so...wheres the hogwash in the facts? Since you brought of population estimates, sure they will not be exactly correct, but they give a general idea of whats going on, and it's not hard to believe that a city that has a large military base next to it affecting the city population could have had a decline from troops relocating. Just like the population was boosted by them relocating to Fort Benning a few years ago, the opposite can happen. What's hard to believe about this that makes you believe this is hogwash?

This is not good news. I know we won't be the only city effected, but it will hit us harder than other Georgia cities, as I said in an earlier thread.

So how many does this mean will be cut at Ft.Benning? I think this post would fit better in a thread about the cuts.

This really puts a dent in forum posters who swore after reading Georgia Trend mags and all yearly predictions from Selig that BRAC was going to bring tons of folks with pockets full of money spending everywhere.
A real case of folks quick to jump on the bandwagon that was never a sure thing.
Now the city will be out 2 to 4 million in lost paychecks weekly in an area already reeling from lack of jobs etc.
I can bet you local businesses are plenty worried about the coming huge cash losses that they could never get from locals or tourism due to low wages etc.
This is serious business folks and the mayors comments on this subject scared me even more!!
