Hi,

I'm considering a move to Columbus GA and wanted to know if the rumors of it being a high-crime area are true. Is this limited to one section or area? Also, would anyone have suggestions on where to move with young kids? We are a non-military family if that matters.

Muscogee Co schools are actually better than Harris Co. Or rather, certain schools in Muscogee are much better than the schools in Harris. Just do your homework and make sure you move into a good school district - or know that the magnet program in Muscogee allows a student living anywhere in the county to attend any magnet school (of which there are several at each level).

Where you live depends on what kind of life you want. North Columbus is heavily suburban - neighborhoods built from the 70s - to today (newer as you move north). The retail strips are full of chains, it looks the same as any other mid to large city suburb in America. Midtown around Lakebottom Park is an established neighborhood from the early 20th c. that has beautiful homes and is very close to the city's core, Uptown - where all the exciting local stuff is happening.

Crime isn't some bugaboo lurking around every corner, though the closer to the southeast quadrant of town you move it is more likely (talking burglary mostly, so an alarm system negates it).

Crime isn't near as bad as some would lead you to believe. It all depends on where you live. Where are you coming from?
