And the way some of you talk about Columbus on the forum, and treat some people not regularly a part of it, may turn away potential visitors. Remember that. I’ve visited several Georgia cities; Augusta, Vidalia, Waycross, Savannah, Brunswick, Atlanta. But I’ve yet to visit Columbus, and I’d love to one day so that I can stop referencing ColumbIA and start referencing ColumbUS.

Brandon, I've been to every city you've mentioned and they are all nice! I hope you'll also visit Columbus! I recommend you do so over a long weekend---say arriving Friday morning and perhaps leaving on Monday morning. If you stay at the Marriott right downtown (UpTown) you can park your car and spend the entire weekend enjoying a great riverfront location, with LOTS of great restaurants, pubs, events, whitewater, zip-lining, etc. ALL within WALKING distance of your hotel!

Speaking of "Soda City," are you referring to Columbia? Because a pharmacist, John Stith Pemberton, from Columbus invented the formula for Coca-Cola and sold it to some big city Atlanta folks! You can see his home right here in Columbus. He is also buried here. Furthermore, RC Cola was started here!
So Columbus, GA is also very much a soda city!! :-)

Don't let what you may perceive as some negative comments here keep you from visiting Georgia's "Best Kept Secret"---Columbus, GA!

Yes, I’ve actually talked to my spouse about visiting soon. The first thing I’d want to do of course though is visit the river. I love the rapids here and on the Catawba River near Charlotte so I know I’d love those. Can you tube down them? I know that sounds trashy, but to me it’s fun. I’m also really big into history as I’m a major in that area. So anything like that I’d enjoy as well. As far as Soda City goes, that’s one theory it’s from the bottling plants, but the more accepted one is that Cola is short for Columbia (if you ever write a letter here, USPS allows shortening it to Cola) and Cola is soda. So Soda City, which would be very befitting of Columbus too if you think about it. Anyhow, I hope I can visit soon, there’s definitely some stuff I’d like to do and see.

Thanks for the Soda City explanation! I learn something every day! I've not done it but I'm sure tubing the "Hooch" would be no problem! You'll definitely need life jackets, because it's required by everyone entering the river.

For starters, here are my "Must Sees!"

The Chattahoochee River for tubing, kayaking, and, of course, whitewater rafting. www.whitewaterexpress.com

The National Infantry Museum www.nationalinfantrymuseum.org

National Civil War Naval Museum www.portcolumbus.org

The Columbus Museum The Columbus Museum - Always Changing, Always Free.

Coca-Cola Science Center www.ccssc.org

Springer Opera House www.springeroperahouse.org There may be a play going on during your visit. If not, they still have backstage tours you can do

RiverCenter www.rivercenter.org Also a really neat performance center.....steps from the Marriott.

Carson McCullers Center www.mccullerscenter.org

Ma Rainey House https://parks.columbusga.gov/Parks/MA-Rainey-Home

Enjoy!!
