My husband and I have lived in Columbus for years. We are adopting our first dog this weekend and are so excited to get out and about with her. What are some good dog friendly places in Columbus? We live in Clintonville, so will be walking the bike path up to the Park of Roses quite a bit. I've heard of a few dog parks and such.

Would appreciate any advice from someone who knows the doggie ropes in Columbus!

I think any of the neighborhood parks Columbus is blessed with are good.
Lots of people have dogs and tend to congregate in these parks after work hours

Congrats on adopting a dog!

If you go to the Giant Eagle in Victorian Village, on Neil, right behind it is a smallish fenced in dog park. Since it seems to be the only one in the city proper, it can be quite busy. When my work schedule was different, I liked bringing my pup early in the morning, around seven, since he does better with smaller crowds. And by crowds, I mean it can be anywhere from 0 to 30 other dogs there. It doesn't sound like much but the place is small. If you have a collection of plastic bags you don't know what to do with, you can bring them; there are bins for donated bags. And since it is small, grass doesn't seem to do so well in the middle ... it can get extremely muddy or dusty. I don't mind dusty but I only bring Wilson on muddy days if it is bath day And there are always spare (if slimy) tennis balls everywhere, which is nice.

Anyway. People are mostly nice but sometimes you get idiots that don't realize their dogs need to be taken home or in time out or something. Ya know, some dogs get cranky or bossy when it is too crowded or hot or whatever ... just like how kids get cranky in a restaurant but their parents just sit there and let them scream. When my dog starts getting 'humpy' or annoying (he's still learning those social skills) we remove him from the situation ... other people let their dogs start fights. Ugh.

I mean, that happens at any dog park, I guess.

There are more parks in the surrounding suburbs. We've only been to the one in Gahanna. It was really nice, really big and everything. Friendly people. The water fountain was super far away from where it seems the dogs like to hang out, but other than that, it is nice.
This is the website for the Gahanna park, and it also has links to other Columbus/suburb parks: Other Dog Parks

And non-park-related, if you bank at Huntington, they are leashed-dog friendly and keep treats at the counter! Wilson loooooooooves going to the bank with me. I don't know about other banks.

We only moved to Columbus in the winter and haven't had the chance to do a lot of outdoor summer dining at restaurants ... where we moved from, dogs were more than welcome to lounge on the patio, and most places would even bring him out a bowl of water (I even had one waitress offer a bowl of plain spaghetti, which would have been hilarious to watch if we had said yes). Does anyone know how restaurants are here?
