I am a mother of two children, one 2 1/2 and the other 2 months, and I receive SSI benefits. I can't hold down a job, so it's really hard to find a good place to rent from, because most places need you to make a few times the rent or you need a co-signer. In any case, I'm looking for a place in Columbus that is in a good place (good neighbors, walking distance to stores because I don't drive) so I don't have to worry about my children. For awhile I'll be living with someone, but he will be called into the navy at any time. He will be sending back money, but I want a place at no more than $650 to ensure I will be able to pay rent no matter what.

I am really curious what the best places to look at would be, because all the reviews I find of potential places have massive complaints about apartment quality, infestations, staff, and crime. A place I really wanted to rent were the apartments at Essington Village, but they require you to make 3 times the rent, OR your co-signer has to make 5 times the rent plus have a credit score of 750. That is ridiculous!

Any help will be greatly appreciated, as right now I'm stuck in the basement floor of my mother's house and it is just not a big enough place for two growing children.

It's really hard to help you nail down a place without doing a massive search ourselves. Columbus is such a big city and there's a TON of factors to take into account. I would go to apartment ratings or a similar website and look by area of the city and price point. You might ask about a surety bond instead of a refundable deposit up front when you sign your lease. It saved us a lot of money as we did not want to pay a full month down plus initial rent while still in our previous lease.

Sorry I can't be of more help =(
