We are new to the Columbus area and I'm trying to plan a post Christmas trip with some friends from Florida. They visit family in Detroit after Christmas and I'm trying to find a good area to rent a cottage for all of us. Planning to post this in the Detroit forum as well but I'd love some input from anyone here who is familiar with making the drive from here to there in December as well. So .. suggestions re:
Driving conditions from here to Detroit and surrounding areas?
Suggestions on nice areas to look for rentals?
Suggestions for specific rentals?
Likelyhood of good sledding/skiing weather?

We'll have four adults and six kids (ages 6,8,8,8,9,11).

Thanks for any insights!

Ohio gets a lot of ice storms and black ice (invisible road ice) from about mid-November to mid-March or so. These have been alternating with snow storms. I, personally, never plan travel more than several days in advance because an ice storm on I-75 and up around the OH-MI border can slow traffic down to 10 mph.

Some years, the post-Christmas period has been dry, while other years, travel has been a nightmare. It all depends on the jet stream incoming storms.

As for sledding and such, it varies.
