I am looking to add a dog to my family, but having a hard time. We've decided on a Pug and actually found one at Petland in Lewis Center. However, they wanted $3,000 and that was the sale price. I didn't want to spend that much. So, I'm hoping someone could provide information on where to look. I've searched the Humane Society (mainly Pit Bull mixed) and even a Pug website. However, I don't feel comfortable purchasing a dog on the internet (and I read the breeder had a bad reputation in Cincinnati). Anyway, I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.

Thank you

Never buy a dog over the web....a sure thing it's from a puppy mill. Personally, anyone who sells a dog for profit is evil. Plenty of good dogs in shelters who need good forever homes. Please don't get obsessed with a particular type.

Oh, and Petland is gets all their dogs from puppy mills. Google them and you will see. Please don't support them.

There are many rescues in addition to the Humane Society with plenty of dogs who need homes, but if you're looking for a particular type, you'll be paying quite a bit and very likely from a mill as Jbeechuk stated. So, it depends how dead-set you are on a Pug or whether you're open to just having a great dog at the house. We got ours from Barely Used Pets in Urbana, and they usually have 20-30 dogs available at any time, including puppies.

Default Craig's List -- search for dogs

Check Craig's List for owners looking for good homes for dogs for free or modest "rehoming fee," whatever that is?

https://columbus.craigslist.org/pet/5210108233.html

https://columbus.craigslist.org/pet/5210919170.html

As you can see, many of the available dogs already have incurred significant vet fees for neutering, etc.

There are hundreds of pages. I just went through a couple of them.

You also could post and describe your preference.

Perhaps consider a contract that says you could return the dog after a specified period if it doesn't have the right temperament for you or if it has some undisclosed condition.

Please let us know where you found your dog.

I would look into an Ohio based pug rescue or www.petfinder.com. I agree with everyone else - stay away from Petland. I've heard numerous stories about how unhealthy the animals are that they sell. I don't agree that people that breed and sell dogs are evil, but it is expensive. They are many dogs (and cats) that need a good home, why not look there first.

I would second going to a shelter or a rescue, my dapple dachshund came from a rescue and was a puppy mill reject, and is the sweetest dog. The sub humans that run the puppy mills are the lowest of the low and deserve a good crack down, they are all about the almighty dollar and treat living creatures like merchandise and care little about their animals. It's a shame because those dogs deserve a loving home too.
