I have a property in Franklin county at the very south of Columbus whose house seats on a 1 acre piece of land (several parcels). For some time groundhogs have lived in my yard, and as far as they don't pose a threat to the structures I let them live there. In the past I used a human trap to try to capture the groundhogs: the adult would not bite in the bait and get trapped, but the younger ones have gone multiple times and got trapped even though they somehow managed to escape.

Yesterday night, I made sure the the weakest links in the trap were fixed and prep the trap again. Earlier today (about 12am) I went to check out the trap and the young groundhog was there lying dead. First off, I don;t understand why it died since it wasn't deprived of food and liquid for any long length of time; but it was hot and very sunny though (still, it was only few hours).

Another issue then is how to dispose of the body. I called animal control in Columbus, and apparently they only deal with dogs and cats. Wild Life Department is closed -- not sure if they would provide any assistance. In most places I lived before animal control would come pick up the corpse of a dead animal. There is obvious a sense of urgency the body will start to decompose... I don't like the idea of dumping it in the trash can, besides it will be there for a long time since collection is not due any time soon.

Bury them or let the scavenger animals have at them.

I've cleared a dozen + squirrels from my infested property and my preference was to double bag them in plastic grocery bags, put in my trunk, drop in a trash can at a gas station. Squirrels chewed a hole in my roof btw, hundreds $ in damage.

It is rather difficult to excavate or dig in my yard due to too much rock sediments, also I would have to make sure no utility is nearby. Leaving the carcass exposed for scavengers does look good.
thks

Due to lack of option, I ended up doing something similar; but I dumped it in a trash can of a homecenter I went to buy something. I did not know that squirrels could cause that sort of damage.

thks
