Hello,
I am an international grad student. Recently, I got accepted for PhD at OSU for the winter quarter (Jan07). I had been in East coast of Canada (Halifax, Nova scotia) for almost 2.5 years doin my masters. The province is so small and crimes did not happen much; could be once a year.
Now, I got scared about Cobus and I will appreciate it much if anyone can help me out in picking me up from Airport and showin me the area in getting a good and reasonable place for rent. I will pay for your gas and a meal too. I will appreciate it too if anyone can send me more info about living expenses in or around OSU campus. Private messages are welcomed too. Please if anyone aware of any families having a room for rent, then I would love to share the house with them.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks a lot for your input and your time in reading my ad.

Oh no there's very little reason to be scared of Columbus.

For a large city Columbus has a very low crime rate. however, it is a city and crimes do happen. Certain areas are safter than others of course.

I presently live just south of the OSU campus. I live on west 8th street just down the street from the med center. There are many grad students on my block and some very nice apartments.

The key to looking for apartments in the university district is that some will be very nice but not look so nice on the outside, while others will look nice on the outside and be rather unrenovated on the inside.

The area surrounding the university is older but has many nice housing options.

If you want to be among more young professionals and in a more gentrified area there are many options because the university is just north of downtown.

For other nice areas near the unviersity I would look into grandview (west of OSU), Clintonville (just north of OSU), and the short north (a very artsy and loft filled area) this is just a few blocks south of the campus between downtown and OSU.

The housing that is in the university district itself is mainly for undergrad students but there are some nicer apartments that are scatered all over.

Also you could look into upper arlington a suburb near the university which would have some condos and apartments, or some condos and apartments off of olentangy river rd. which are just a few mintues NW of osu.

Anyway, I hope this helps. My street on W8th and High st. is alright but is one of the higher crime areas around the university. I have never had a problem and the crime is mostly related to individuals who know each other.

It would be helpful if you provided the following information:

1) When you wanted to come to Columbus
2) How much money you are able to budget for rent.
3) How you plan to get around when you live here. Do you plan to buy a car/motorcycle, or do you plan to get around on public transportation?
