We are moving to Powell next week and need to buy a new washer and dryer for the house. Besides Sears/big box stores, where else to go locally to shop for high quality appliances?

Thanks!

What wrong with Sears for appliances?

They have good ads.

I know it is a big box store but Sears has great deals. July 4th is soon so check the appliance sales. Lool...it is funny but when I moved to Columbus I was also told by numerous people to check Yelp. Like I already checking Yelp and Google. Hhgregg and hhgregg fine lines in easton is a decent place.

When I lived in Medina, I always bought appliances from a mom and pop appliance store (Home Appliance Sales and Service). They serviced what they sold, and they only sold the most reliable brands, because they knew which ones held up the best.
I know you're too far away to go there, but I would look for this type of place in Columbus. You could check to see if Columbus was in their service area, but I suspect its a bit far.

I think it's a good idea to support local mom&pop outfits, but let's be honest. Is a Gold Series Whirlpool dishwasher from mom&pop llc. going to be any better than the same item from Sears or HH Gregg?

Not sure about Columbus, but the salespeople at the HH Greggs in my area have historically been pushy, bordering on a pain in the a55 even at times in the past. By contrast, at Lowes and Home Depot you just about couldn't find an appliance salesperson to even answer a question. Sears was the happy medium... you get waited on without some guy being nervous about losing his job if he doesn't make the sale.

Builders' Appliance Supply used to be a pretty good store. They had a lot of high end stuff since they supplied builders, but HH Gregg bought them out and I'm sure they carry most of those lines.

I'm okay with the big box home improvement stores, but my favorite is Menard's (it's family owned).

I don't know what to tell you about Sears. Kenmore used to be mostly Whirlpool, but Sears tried to chisel them down on price and a lot of Kenmore stuff is now made by Frigidaire, LG or Samsung. Sears is not long for this earth so I wonder who's going to service those appliances if Sears goes under.

It is true that there's no difference between buying the same appliance from a big box store or a mom and pop, and the mom and pop might even cost a bit more. The bigger question is about service. I feel a lot better, giving a small company my business, and that the guy who comes to fix my appliance will be speedy, reliable and competent.

Also, don't forget

1. ApplianceSmart - they specialize in new appliances with dents and dings.
2. Sears Outlet
