Hello. Looking for individuals who may have material and/or stories relating to the Ohio State Penitentiary. Unfortunately as time passes, more and more mementos from the facility are thrown away. I am looking for ANYTHING from the prison. Photos, badges, clothing, paperwork, mug shots, inmate artwork, etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cordially,

The Dailey Historical Archives

I was a guest there untill it closed in 1983. I was one of the last out.. I do have my inmate photo with number . The prison was called columbus correctional center at the end..I was transferd to the new oreint prison that they had opend. and shortly was paroled. I do have copy of everyone that got paroled same time as me. I had worked at the parole office in the old pen . If only people new the torment. I did hate to see it torn down though.

The going home suits issued at the O.P. from 1976 - 1984 were purchased at Schottenstein's on Parsons Ave. The state paid $12.00 for suits that Schottenstein's couldn't sell, so you can imagine what they looked like.

Albert Thomas • Ohio Penitentiary Guard • This is a fine example on the importance of keeping items together. Had the billy club or slapjack been separated....they would have simply been novelties. The history would have evaporated. With his name, image and badge number intact, his story permeates these artifacts. The Dailey Archives welcomes Officer Thomas. I believe he would be pleased to know that his service has been memorialized Now for the research to find out what else he would like to say. If anyone has any info please contact me at jdaileyii@yahoo.com

Andy at Haunted Ohio has some photos: The Old Ohio Pen

There's also a post on his pal's site about it, which actually has some neat photos: don't collect $200 - illicitohio.com (http://illicitohio.com/illicitohio/bighouse.html - broken link)

Dear Dailey Historical I happen to be on the computer tonight trying to look up some info on the old Ohio State Pen and I saw your message about wantring anything in essence from the old ohio pen. I've actually have done time in there in 1972 & 1973. I went to O.P. as we called it, in the year 1972 and I was 17 years of age then. I do have a few stories for you. Most importedly I have something rare from O.P. that I don't think anyone esle in the world has. I have some old receipts of the prinsoners when they got money in or put into their accounts or on their Books. My Receipts are dated in the years of 1892, 1893, 1894. I know these receipts are valuable for various reasons. Let me know what you think and what I should do? I'll appreciate that. Correndsponding by the computer I'll tell you right now, will not work for me, you will have to call me.Moderator cut: Phone number removed, contact this member using a direct message. Call me anytime, I look forward to hearing from you. The Receipts I have are unique.
