Hey guys,

sorry for the redundancy (I know there's a lot of this style of posting on here), but I'm (22 years old, grew up in Pittsburgh,PA) strongly considering transferring to OSU to pursue a degree in English. Lately,I've been reading a lot of the posts on forums stating to beware of OSU's campus and that area of the city among some other concerns about crime in Columbus. I've visited the city a few times and it seems great, but then again, I was just visiting. Just hoping for some opinions of people about what I should do as a potential OSU student and member of the columbus community. thanks!

The OSU campus area is nice, but is very dense. I live on south campus myself and have lived in other section of columbus/suburbs and the central city.

I really like living on campus, i would suggest looking into north campus. The area is fairly safe and has a greater mix of families and students. South campus, where i live is nice also, but can have a little more urban feel to it.

Mid campus is literally nothing but student apartment buildings, houses. That is nice, but personally i think its almost too crazy. That is why i suggest north campus. Also, north campus is near Clintonville, a great family neighborhood.

Another tip for moving to the university district. The closer to high st. the better. Also anything on west of high has lower crime rates, but there is less housing west of high.

East of high isn't bad just try avoid anything just north of King Ave and up until 11th ave. This is just a small section, and only applys to the east of high st. area.

The closer you live to high st. the closer you are to walking to restaurants, book stores, coffe shops, and the OSU classes. The area is great and has a lot of people. The crime in the area does occur, but it is usually isolated incidents. The area is very dense, prob. the most in columbus, and has thousands upon thousands in it daily.

Of course you will have crime, most of the crime is not from those who live in university district, but those who live in the neighborhoods east of the university district. As a male i never feel unsafe, some females do try to walk in groups when alone at night, especially if your walking in a long unlit street. Those who call the area unsafe forget how many people are in the area daily. Do you think that dense nice areas of any major city doesn't have some crime occur? Of course they do, I don't believe that means that you can't live there.

Also, when looking for an apartment, do beware that one unit will be very very nice, then the other can be a bit more shaky. You will need to drive around, look at adds on craigs list, and see each unit or home for yourself.

Another plus is that mass transist, buses, on high st. run later and about every 20minutes. by taking a bus down high you are right in the arts district, then downtown, and then german village. There's always something different to do just near the campus or on the campus. It is a great friendly and fun environment. As an older student, you could look into the Gateway apartments right on high st. These are a new development, and a little more pricy, but nice and have a work out center and other things in them.
I do strongly recommend that you live near school.

Campus will assist you with classes. I am not in the same department as you so I do not know which professors you may want or those things, but the campus is kind of spread out. There is a bus system that the campus provides to get you around. HOwever, most of your main classes are going to be either on north, central, or south campus, depending upon your major. West campus is the only area that is a hike, and it's is only for athletics and less popular majors.

Grandview is nice, but not really as a student, you can't walk and hello??
have these forumers on here actually tried to DRIVE and PARK at OSU?!!!
You can't
You want to live off High St. in the areas that I mentioned, the actual university district, south clintonville, or maybe the short north (on par with Grandview Prices but near OSU)

Living in the dense, colorful environment around OSU is the only way to get to classes easily, not have to drive, and have take advantage of the university and surrounding city.]

Grandview is a nice suggestion, but more as a GRAD student, if that.

I agree driving to OSU is the absolute pits, and parking there is a horrendous pain in the butt!

However, lots of students do live in Grandview and manage to deal with it. Especially at the grad school level.

It's the basic tradeoff, and it depends what matters more to each individual.

Do you prefer convenience, immediate proximity and the "excitement" of campus? Or the relative safety, nicer living space and quieter environment of Grandview? With so many students in the area, there are quite a few in each camp.

I'm pretty okay with living close to campus, as long as it's safe. If driving to campus and parking is as bad I'm seeing here I might not have a choice.
